Barrow Raiders 30 Swinton Lions 34

Steve McCormack reckons Swinton still have plenty to work on after a 34-30 victory over Barrow Raiders in Cumbria on Sunday.

The Lions were second best in the first-half but got their act together in the second to claim a deserved success.

“We didn’t play well in the first half and Barrow probably deserved their half-time lead,” said the Lions coach.

“But in the second half we were excellent and played some good stuff. We were a totally different team second half.

“We still have a lot to work on. Defensively we dropped off a little bit but we kept our composure and, with the ball, we looked pretty good at times.

“The players kept their structure and we took our chances in the second-half.

“We had three tries disallowed during the first half and if we had taken those it would have made it more respectable at half-time.”

Swinton took the lead in the first minute through stand-off Chaz I’Anson but three tries in seven minutes from Dan Toal (2) and Scott Kaighan, all converted by Kaighan gave Barrow a comfortable 18-4 half-time lead.

Tries early in the second-half from Martin Ainscough and Dale Cunniffe brought the Lions back into the game.

Brad Marwood scored a breakaway try for Barrow but then the Lions took control with four tries from Tom Armstrong, Darren Hawkyard, Richie Hawkyard and Sam Reay.

Barry Pugh scored for Barrow with eight minutes left to bring them back to within four points and the Lions had to defend solidly to claim the victory.
