Phoenix boost for Faith and Spelda

TONY HAND reckons imports Juraj Faith and Jaroslav Spelda have finally found their feet at Manchester Phoenix.

Slovakian centre Faith and defenceman Spelda, from the Czech Republic, played starring roles as the English Premier League champions took their winning streak to six.

Czech Republic defenceman Spelda had a tough time at the start of the season after  picking up a nasty ankle infection which required surgery.

Faith just took time to settle into his new environment after his move from Slovakia but is now the creative hub of the team in the absence of Hand with a broken ankle.

Both players scored three goals each as Phoenix secured an impressive 4-2 win in Slough followed by an 8-5 victory in Telford.

Hand said: “They played really well – they were fantastic actually.

“Faith got seven points over the weekend while Spelda scored a couple of good goals but was defensively sound.

“It’s tough when guys come over to a country and they’ve never played there before.

“We’ve also had a lot of injuries and that has upset the balance of the team.

“We’ve never had settled lines with me being out and Tom Duggan and Steve Wallace injured.”

Phoenix, now joint third in the English Premier League table,  travel to Basingstoke on Saturday before entertaining Milton Keynes at Altrincham on Sunday (5.30pm).

They represent two tough games against a side just below them in the table and one just above.

But Hand is hoping his rejuvenated side can continue their hot streak.

“To go on a six-game run is just what we needed and we are still operating with just one natural centreman,” he said

“It’s been a pretty good run. We’ve not been lucky or getting breaks and we’ve deserved our wins.

“We’ve found a way to win, battled hard, and we’ve been doing the little things right.

“If the guys can do that you never know what might happen.

“Long may it continue.”
