The team

Chris Brierley

I cut my teeth in journalism on the Salford City Reporter before joining Arthur Lamb’s team on the Daily Star in Ancoats.

I took a transfer to the Manchester Evening News where I became deputy sports editor.

I now work as a freelance sub-editor and sports writer specialising in rugby league, football and ice hockey.

I set up cbsport to showcase some of my work and promote the “smaller” sports like rugby league, ice hockey and speedway which don’t get the publicity they deserve. I’ve been helped along by former colleagues who make daily contributions – all for free – for which I am truly grateful.

I’m always on the look-out for work – even a full-time job!

So if you like what you see and think I could be of help to your business then feel free to get in touch.

Richard Frost

Barrow boy who moved to the Birmingham Evening Mail as a rookie reporter.

Worked for the MEN and the Daily Mirror. Covered Bolton Wanderers but his real love is speedway and the Belle Vue Aces.

David Meek

Meeky is regarded as a legend by all of us who worked with him at the MEN. Covered Man United from the Munich Air Disaster until 1995 when he “retired”. He still does a bit of part time at OT is wheeled out at regular intervals to comment on United affairs.

John Forbes

Lester to his friends after his days in the saddle producing the racing pages in the MEN. He’s a greyhounds expert but some people say he’s been going to the dogs for years.

Colin Evans

Freelance cricket writer who covered Lancashire and England for all the nationals and the MEN for donkeys’ years. Brilliant writer – read his first book “Mods and Blockers- Lancashire’s Rock ‘n Roll Years – and a top bloke.

Mike Whalley

The “youngster” in the team and since going freelance in 2007 has written for the Manchester Evening News, the Sunday Express, the Sunday Times, the Daily Star Sunday and When Saturday Comes magazine.

David Birtill

Birty started on the Chorley Guardian in the days when they used pigeons to send copy and starred on most of the nationals in the days when they were produced in Manchester. Ended up on the MEN until “retirement”. He’s the PGA North press officer and what he doesn’t know about golf you could write on the back of a tee peg.

Brad Cain

Brad is a sports fan from Gorton who supports Man City, loves cricket and cycling. He’s not a journalist but is a talented writer whose reports on the Ashes and Man City have become popular on cbsport
